IRC Chat

Katsu87 Apr 21, 2013 10:46AM PDT

I usually interact with my channel through an external IRC program (X Chat) instead of the web chat. For the past few days I have been unable to connect to the chat. The web chat is still working as far as I can tell but not my IRC program. This is the case for every channel I've tried to join through IRC.

* Looking up katsu87.jtvirc.com
* Unknown host. Maybe you misspelled it?

If i try through the server IP address I get a slightly different error.

* Looking up 199.9.253.199
* Connecting to 199.9.253.199:6667 (199.9.253.199) port 6667...
* Connected. Now logging in...
* Disconnected (Remote host closed socket).

Did the method for connecting to the chat through an external program change or is it just not working?
Any help would be appreciated.

Katsu87,

The jtvirc.com host has been down periodically in the last week or so, manually connect to these servers instead:

199.9.253.199
199.9.250.229
199.9.253.210
199.9.250.239

On mIRC, use this command /server 199.9.250.229 6667 PASSWORD -i USERNAME (or type /nick USERNAME before connecting) If port 6667 does not work, try 443. The Disconnected error you are getting is usually related to a password mismatch, I'd suggest posting /debug info here to find out exactly.

I'm getting the exact same error above when trying to connect with HexChat, and when I try to use the other IPs listed it gives a different error;

* Looking up 199.9.253.199
* Connecting to 199.9.253.199:6667 (199.9.253.199:6667)
* Connection failed ((336031996) error:140770FC:SSL routines:SSL23_GET_SERVER_HELLO:unknown protocol)

It gives the same error on port 6667 and 443.

People that are unable to connect to their: username.jtvirc.com (unknown host), try using irc.twitch.com instead. Good luck :)

FYI: For Twitch IRC chat, go to irc.twitch.tv

We pushed a fix for recent chat issues since outage. Just log out and log back in to see if the update fixes chat for you.

I recently ran into this problem, and was completely unable to connect. I eventually found out that the problem was not which server I was trying to connect to, but that my new password after the forced password reset happened to contain a few spaces, and the IRC server doesn't seem to allow that (which is super-lame in my opinion, but there you go). Removing the spaces from my password made it work again.

I have a question pertaining to the jtvirc.com --> irc.twitch.tv

Previously you typed username.jtvirc.com/6667

So now you would just type username.irc.twitch.tv/6667

I know its a simple question but needed some help, I still can't connect to the server at all

my username has both lower and upper case letters if that is an issue?? xxATOMANTxx is my user name???

Did anyone ever get this resolved? Trying to attach to my twitch chat through xchat2 and getting the CAP: Unknown command and disconnect. I've gone through and made sure that there are no spaces in my UN or PW, tried connecting to both the taladan.jtvirc.com and irc.twitch.tv, played around with every setting I can find in there. Looking at it, it seems that there's a command being automatically sent on connect that the twitch servers aren't coping with and kicking the client connection. I thought it might be the auto /motd command and set that to auto skip in my client but that did nothing. Also tried to see if maybe SSL had been flipped on, but got nowhere with that.

Hoping someone's been able to figure this out, or maybe this can get more attention from twitch staff as this is a feature many streamers seem to enjoy...and miss.

Hi,

To clear up some of the common IRC issues, I need you to check your settings:

Server: irc.twitch.tv
Port: 80,443,6667 (6667 is the official port)
Password: oauth:TOKEN

To get your TOKEN follow the "Connecting" procedure located in our official knowledge base article on IRC.
http://help.twitch.tv/customer/portal/articles/1302780-twitch-irc

You can get it from twitchapps.com/tmi or from our API.

An example "password" would be "oauth:asdasd234234jk234asd" or similar once you get your token.

This change was made because we do not use SSL for chat, and did not want to expose any user hashes (this was fairly minor, but we want to do things correctly!)

Thanks!

Hi,

sorry for bumping this thread, but I've encountered the "Login unsuccessful" issues as well.

I was connected to the IRC for a few days uninterrupted, but today I had an internet outage, which of course disconnected me from IRC. Upon trying to log in again, I got this message (using NetTalk):

~ Connect... OK
- tmi.twitch.tv: Login unsuccessful
~ Connection closed

I have used irc.twitch.tv and the direct IPs to connect to, and both using password and oauth to log in, in every possible combination, yet I still receive this error message.

You may want to reset your oauth token if you are still getting an error.
