Can't Connect to Twitch IRC

justNeph Feb 05, 2013 04:56PM PST

I tried with X-Chat and now in HexChat and both are giving me errors. If I try to connect to tmi.justin.tv/6667, I get:

* Connecting to tmi.justin.tv (199.9.250.77:6667)
* Connection failed (Connection timed out)

If I try to connect to justneph.jtvirc.com/6667, I get:

* Looking up justneph.jtvirc.com
* Unknown host. Maybe you misspelled it?

Any ideas what i could be doing wrong?

tmi.justin.tv doesn't actually direct to an IRC server, but you should be able to get in using justneph.jtvirc.com... It works just fine for me, so make sure your username is in all lowercase letters and the password you provided is correct.
If all else fails just connect directly to 199.9.250.229 or 199.9.253.199.

Also, it sounds like a DNS problem to me, so flushing your DNS cache might solve it. You can do that on Windows by holding the Windows key + R, then running "ipconfig /flushdns" (without the quotation marks)

Hi,

To clear up some of the common IRC issues, I need you to check your settings:

Server: irc.twitch.tv NOT jtvirc.com. JUST use "irc.twitch.tv"
Port: 80,443,6667 (6667 is the official port)
Password: oauth:TOKEN

To get your TOKEN follow the "Connecting" procedure located in our official knowledge base article on IRC.
http://help.twitch.tv/customer/portal/articles/1302780-twitch-irc

You can get it from twitchapps.com/tmi or from our API.

An example "password" would be "oauth:asdasd234234jk234asd" or similar once you get your token.

This change was made because we do not use SSL for chat, and did not want to expose any user hashes (this was fairly minor, but we want to do things correctly!)

Thanks!

The server at www.twitch.tv can't be found, because the DNS lookup failed. DNS is the network service that translates a website's name to its Internet address. This error is most often caused by having no connection to the Internet or a misconfigured network. It can also be caused by an unresponsive DNS server or a firewall preventing Google Chrome from accessing the network.
