Lag while streaming.

heroxoot May 16, 2013 04:01PM PDT

So I have 50/5 from timewarner. Around February twitch started becoming heavily laggy for me. Streaming anything becomes impossible at any quality. I have no issue seeing my pc get a 1mb download from a live stream on youtube. I have called TWC and they said there is no throttle, and even if there was, only the suits at the top would know anything about it. I have been dealing with this for 4 months almost and its stopping me from buying Turbo, let alone subbing to a specific caster. Twitch blames TWC, TWC blames twitch.

I have been told last night by level 3 technical support that he would put in a ticket to have this checked but chances are NOTHING will be done on their end. He said especially if its 1 site, they won't bother because its not worth the time. I've more or less been told I should just leave twitch because nothing will be done.

I have blocked pretty much every IP address. Sometimes a VPN works but I don't have the extra cash right now for a half good VPN that wont advertise at me. Some days are better than others.

Small update. Its only twitch at this point, justin.tv too. Yesterday was great and lagless and today has lag. But I popped my stream window and then closed it and magically it works. I can only imagine its just a lack of connection to twitch but I don't know who to get help from anymore. I can stream other things at high quality just fine. As funny as it sounds I was stremaing from youtube and it was fine again. ustream all streams are great. Gaming is perfect and solid. I can only assume its some kind of hate between TWC and twitch. Packet dropping perhaps? If there is anything else to try I have not found let me know.

again I have:

Blocked IPs of multiple things
Got Ghostery to block quantcast

I do also keep ABP off for twitch because I love this site.

Heroxoot,

I've seen traceroutes of TWC customers that are being routed from NYC > Frankfurt, which seems very odd. Can you post a traceroute to live.twitch.tv here? Have you changed DNS servers and found any change? IF you do decide that a VPN is the only route, I personally recommend PIA (private internet security), several users have found that's the cheapest for the best service.

It does seem to be only TWC at the moment that is having issues, so it seems odd that TWC wouldn't be at fault if it was primarily a TWC issue (if there were widespread complaints from roadrunner, verizon, at&t, or comcast as well, I would be more prone to think it was a level3/twitch issue). Please get back to us with the information though, as that can be helpful in diagnosing any issues!

Best Regards,

Xangold

I've been unable to watch any stream over 1mbps all day, and its so frustrating. I'm able to stream just fine at 3.5mbps all day long, but I can't even watch my own stream.

I go over to my 4gLTE phone and can see its working just fine. I'm watching WCS_America right now at 480p, because that's all I can do. Speedtest shows a solid 30/5 connection, but I can't get a good route to twitch.

Tracerts don't look odd. Everything looks perfectly fine, except I can't watch anything. I'm so frustrated at TWC and Twitch for not solving this issue. Its been a problem for over a year, yet this is the absolute worst I've ever seen it. I tried the "solution" of blocking Twitch server IPs in hopes that another server is better, which does route me to another server... but the problem is still there. No difference between servers.

There's a major problem with routing when I can get a better stream from my phone.

You are not the only one having this issue. Everything that you have said is exactly what I have been having issues with too. I have 50/5 from twc and they say their is nothing on their end. I wish I could find an answer to this b/c I watch twitch religiously. I don't even watch tv anymore b/c i prefer to watch these pros and tournaments more.

Having the same problem as well, 50/5 TWC connection for me.

Had Cox communications 30/5 connection in Fort Walton Beach, FL and everything was fine. Then moved up to Dayton, OH and had to get TWC just a few days ago and it's now impossible to watch streams without this BS "pause-play-pause" stuttering in the stream.

They definitely need to fix this, I don't care who the hell is at fault. If it's twitch then they should fix it cause they're going to lose money since I'm certainly not going to use their site since it's impossible to watch streams. If it's TWC, then they need to fix it because I'll fricking switch ISP's, go with basic service, etc unless it's fixed soon.

So I'm on comcast and I'm having similar issues.. as of early this year I've not been able to stream consistently at any resolution > 480p (and even that is occasionally laggy). I have zero issue

I have been having the same problem over the last month or two. I use TWC. I can't watch anything without it constantly stuttering.

Very similar tracetroute results as Trindle had.

I'm also on TWC in upstate NY, 15/1 mbps, and have been getting this problem for the past few months.

I've been watching JTV / Twitch since 2008 and had a great connection that could have multiple streams up on full quality 95% of the time. However since Feb. 2013, once it starts lagging I'm lucky if it doesn't stutter on 240p and the problem just seem to be getting more frequent as time goes on.

I posted in another thread a month ago about this issue. Twitch support's answer was: "Laxcor and Viper358 - Both of you have numerous hops before you reach our CDN network. Thus, all that travel time is causing the delay." Or that its an ISP issue, which it looks like something is up with TWC, but they basically brushed it off as not their problem and just ignored the rest of the thread.

Hopefully some progress can be made in finding out whats wrong and where the issue is if enough people keep bringing it up.

I can't even watch a stream at 720 without massive stutters with 30/1 internet from TWC. It's pretty annoying when I can't watch streams without lots of problems.

I can't help but notice that those of us having this problem seem to be in upstate NY (and possibly all on TWC).

Posting another couple traceroute results from today, in case it can help.

We all seem to be timing out around the same area too.

As was mentioned by others... everything else is working fine. Twitch.tv is the only site I am having this type of problem with. Not saying it's definitely twitches fault, but there's something wrong somewhere.

I was just getting into actually hosting a stream when this started happening. All my ambition continue streaming is lost until this is fixed.
